Seven years after the delightful Freddy Vs Jason, they decided to reboot the Nightmare franchise. The fans were hungry for it. But there was a caveat. We only really wanted it if you could give us a Freddy Krueger that we could accept. That’s truly where the biggest divide comes from. Jackie Earle Haley was the choice to replace Robert Englund. Jackie is a fine actor, and he wasn’t the problem, in all honesty. It was many other aspects. Wes Craven hated this film being made. Heather Langenkamp turned down a cameo. Rooney Mara almost quit acting after this film. The dream sequences were often cut too short. Some of the content was quite unsettling. We all love a villainous Freddy, but did we want to see how dark his origin was or did we want a Freddy with some sense of humor? Despite a solid cast, most fans walked away unsatisfied, if not downright unhappy.
