Let’s go back to where we began, M Night Sham. Come to find out, most of his films are not considered horror. Fortunately, his third-best film is. SO there’s that going for it. But it is still M Night, so it is far, far, far from perfect. The Happening was perfect. I kid.
So you want a plot? 5 people get stuck in an elevator. An old woman, a young woman, a smart ass, a white guy, and a black guy who works at this office building. The workers are trying to get the elevator working throughout most of this. Things go awry and some investigators are doing investigative shit. And people in the elevator start getting hurt. It’s now a question of who is the Devil in the elevator. Simple plot, and it works.
Well as people start getting hurt when the lights go out and eventually dying, the paranoia and accusations start piling up. Meanwhile, the detectives and security guys are working on getting them out of the elevator, figuring out who is doing what, keep the public at ease, and of course wildly speculating about a Devil…..that’s the name of the movie.
I won’t reveal the big tweest, but if you paid enough attention and have seen enough horror, you had a good idea who it wasn’t. As I said, this is my third favorite M Night film behind Signs and Unbreakable, and it’s not even close. The next favorite would have to be The Happening, then Lady in Water as I have never seen it, followed by After Earth as I have never seen it, followed by Sixth Sense as I have unfortunately seen that one. I give this movie a solid 6, which I am sure is too high, but I have a guilty pleasure for elevator based films. So what, you want to fight about it? I’d recommend this to somebody who has 80 minutes to kill and wanted something fairly straightforward and mindless with a hint of intrigue. The characters aren’t terrible, but they are far from great either.
