Diary of the Dead (2007)

The fifth of the Romero zombie films and I would guess a polarizing film.  Yes, it is like a found footage style, but with actual good camerawork.  So the camerawork isn’t actually a problem when viewing, but I guarantee that it instantly turned away a large number of viewers.

When some college kids see the videos on the news and on YouTube, they decide to head home to be with their families.  Of course, they hit some snags along the way.  They have one girl who hurts herself and they go to the hospital, with bad results.  Then they meet up with this group of black dudes, and that goes pretty well.  They were well supplied in this warehouse.  It was pretty interesting.  Then they go to one of the girl’s parents home, with expected results.  At some point, they meet some national guards, who we will meet in the next film.  Finally, they make their way to a rich friends mansion, and that’s where the final act plays out.

This isn’t that bad of a film.  It has it’s annoying college kid cliches at work.  The professor is by far the best main character because he drinks, tells cool stories, and he knows how to use weapons.  I’m surprised that he wasn’t black because that seems like a Romero staple, which I would have totally been pleased with.  Most of the characters are annoying.  I didn’t mind Tracy.  She was the best of the female characters, I thought.  The group at the warehouse was a cool idea.  The uploaded video footage was really good stuff.  Everything played out as one would expect.

This felt almost too cliched for Romero, but he took the tired college kids in horror movie cliches, added zombies, and he made it watchable.  He proved once again how good he is at making low budget competent films.

Rating: 5.5 – I didn’t love this, but I would rewatch it if I was bored or doing a Romero marathon.  The characters were irritating, intentionally so, I think.  The story was fine.  Just lower your expectations and enjoy the good scenes.

I am doing a GoFundMe to help pay for the costs to keep 9deuce.com up and running.  I don’t make any money off of the site.  I do it because I love it, but it is expensive at times, and I had to recently renew for 3 years.  So I am asking any of my readers to consider donating if they have the extra funds.  If you don’t, I get it.  It would mean a lot to me.
