My mom took me and my buddy Alan to see this in the theater, and this movie was in 3D. Yup, I was sold.
This movie gets a ton of shit. Some, if not most of it, is entirely warranted. So let’s tackle the negatives first. Freddy is in cheesy one liner mode at this point to the point that there is no shred of scary left in his repertoire. Secondly, no continuity really from the previous 5 movies aside from the basic principles behind Freddy. Third, the story just kinda sucks and seems tacky.
Now the positives are that Johnny Depp, Roseanne, and Tom Arnold are all in this briefly. Some of the deaths are decent, the ear one, the video game one was cheesy but great as well. The twist about his kid. The flashbacks to Freddy’s past. The cheesy 3D effects.
This was my first Nightmare on Elm Street theatrical experience and as a kid, it was fun. As an adult, the flaws are super glaring. I really hated Lisa Zane as well. And I like her brother Billy of Demon Knight and Titanic fame.
Is this any better or any worse than part 5? Tough to judge that. The kill count is similar, better kills though. Here’s the thing that truly baffles me though. In theory, they use the same technique in this as they do in part one to kill Freddy, so what the fuck. Why did it suddenly work here? Bah.
I give this a 5.9 based on weaker storyline comparatively to 5. Flip a coin if you like.
