This is the last vampire movie that I have officially planned, but more could occur by month’s end. This movie had to be on the list because as great as the story is to Interview and Lost Boys, well this movie is great in it’s cheesiness, dialogue, and overall fun factor.
The first thing that needs to be said is that Robert Rodriguez directed this. It should come at no surprised that Tarantino is in this along with Harvey Keitel. Now the first big surprise is that George Clooney is in this, and he is a bad ass, and it works well for him. He should take more roles like this. He got himself pigeon holed into dumb roles, like Matthew McConaughey, who will be talked about 6 or 7 blogs from now. Juliette Lewis is in this doing Juliette Lewis shit, not as cool as Natural Born Killers, but fun role for her. Salma Hayek does a sexy strip with a snake, and all guys certainly enjoyed that. Cheech Marin has 3 roles in this and is entertaining in all 3, but the Pussy role was his best for obvious reasons. Finally, once at the Titty Twister, we meet a murder’s row of Danny Trejo, Tom Savini, and Fred Williamson. Hell, Michael Parks reprises his role as Texas Ranger Earl McGraw who appears in a lot of Tarantino films. Kelly Preston is a news reporter. And lastly, John Saxson is in this as well, and you would most likely know him as Nancy’s father in Nightmare on Elm Street 1, 3, and New Nightmare.
As for the plot, well Clooney and Tarantino are criminal brothers who are on the run and need to meet up with Cheech in Mexico, so they need help crossing the border. They end up getting in an RV with Harvey, Julieete and his son. There’s a lot of dialogue here, some good, some boring, but anyway, they finally cross the border and end up at the Titty Twister bar. While there, they find out that a bunch of the strippers and employees are vampires. Shit hits the fan. Tom Savini, better known as Sex Machine does does awesome shit as does Fred Williamson. It then comes down everybody uniting for a common cause of surviving. Writing it down, it sounds mediocre, but it really was fun. Clooney and Harvey steal the show here but everybody appeared to have a lot of fun. As far as a rating goes, the reality is that although I have seen it probably close to 10 times, it’s a slightly better than average flick with fond memories and fun story. Still, that’s not a bad thing. Giving it a 6.8.
