I regret to say that I am reviewing the remakes and not the originals, I like the originals much more. The remakes are fine for what they are, but I know for a fact, it loses some of it’s grittiness that only 70’s horror can often provide. Plus, let’s not forget, the genius Wes Craven originally made this.
Let me first tackle the big rape scene. It was tame people! I have no idea why people have made such a big deal out of this scene. Have you people ever seen the original I Spit On your Grave or Irreversible? Stop making a big deal out of this scene.
So what’s this about exactly? You have a family travelling in the southwest of the US, car breaks down in an area that was used for nuclear testing and isn’t supposed to be inhabited anymore. Obviously it is and these inhabitants are super aggressive mutant mother fuckers. That’s the whole point, yet it works so well. One doesn’t always need super compelling stories, sometimes, a decent premise carried out well is all that one needs. This movie does it’s few things well and that’s why it has a following I feel. This remake was good, as you can’t replicate the feeling of the 70’s, so they did try to jack up the gore and violence factor. The ending was kinda sad with Ruby, but it was well done.
I’d say that if you haven’t seen this movie and you want a lot of gore, a simple story, and a bloody fun time, this should appease most. If this doesn’t sound like your thing, then move along. I’ll give this a 6, nothing great, but perfectly fine for what it was and I like watching it every so often.
