I swore I wouldn’t watch another movie starring her. I fucking hate Hilary Swank as a performer. I just don’t like anything I have seen her in. I avoid her like a fat man avoids a diet. But the plot intrigues me. And it also has Emma Roberts, Betty Gilpin, Ethan Suplee, and Amy Madigan. That’s a great cast. It’s also a 90-minute movie and it’s on HBO. You understand, I kinda have to watch this and give it a try. Either it is good and I am pleasantly surprised, or it sucks ass and I get to rip on it. Either way, we all win, right?
I sat here and ate popcorn and said fuck doing a play-by-play. This seemed like it would be a tedious one to do like that. Fucking A, I can’t believe I am saying this, but that was a good movie. You only have to deal with Hilary for a small portion of the film. Some bigger names die earlier than anticipated, but the 2 leads are the leads. We all assumed that much.
What I didn’t assume was the level of comedy that would be involved. It insulted people on both sides of the political divide in the US. Allow me to rant for a moment. Feel free to skip to the next paragraph. You fucking idiots that take politics too seriously and post on social media or just randomly bring that shit up in a group conversation, you’re the idiots that are making politics more annoying than ever before. Double middle finger salute to all of you. You deserve it. Yes, some of you are friends, some of you are mortal enemies.
Anyway, I thought this would be more akin to something like Surviving the Game, and it was only to a small extent. I’ve seen enough films and stories like this, and they do tend to be captivating to watch. I thought the political aspect would ruin it, but if anything, it made it better because it insulted everyone. If I can watch a film that insults everyone or kills everyone, I’m usually quite pleased.
The big question that I have is which side was Don on. I’ve seen people interpret it in two different ways. I think that he was one of the 12. It makes sense for Athena to manipulate Snowball. Also, Don never seemed to lure her or do anything against her. He just went with the flow. If you have theories as to why you think he was a hunter instead, please do enlighten me. They clearly only show 9 of the 12 in photos for this very reason. I’m also okay with never knowing the real answer.
There were some good performances from Ethan Suplee, to no surprise, and Amy Madigan and Reed Birney, who played Mom and Pop. The man from Connecticut was also good. I don’t want to give that away.
I don’t know if there is a moral to this story or if there are hidden meanings. I interpreted in that people will just treat others like shit based on political perspectives, but I am sure it is deeper than that, and I don’t give a fuck. I was Kentertained. Isn’t that what matters?
What I find interesting is that Blumhouse Productions distributed this and Black Christmas 2019, and these 2 films couldn’t be more different. So congrats, Blumhouse.
Final Rating – 6.2 – Yeah, I really enjoyed it. Betty Gilpin needs more roles where she can shine. She was really great in GLOW as well.
