Interview With The Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994)

Here we go, what I consider the best vampire movie of all time. I am not gonna argue this with others because this is a very subjective thing, and I have teetered on this through the years. I will make my case, while providing some insight on the story as well as the acting.

I guess I will start with the acting. This is Tom Cruise’s all time best performance, there I said it. He nails Lestat and owns this movie. Brad Pitt still in his younger days, holds his own with Cruise. Think about how he was in fight Club. As great as he was, Edward Norton was slightly better because he gave an all time performance. Sadly, Pitt has been nominated for Oscars for his performance in Moneyball, Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and 12 Monkeys. I get 12 Monkeys, it was a fantastic film. Then there is Christian Slater who took this role after his brother River died, and did typical Christian Slater stuff. Antonio Banderas and Stephen Rea are pretty good in their performances. And of course this was Kirsten Dunst’s big breakout role and she did a pretty damn good job. So from an acting standpoint, it’s probably got the best, or at very worse, tied with Lost Boys.

Then the story is pretty damn solid. It’s about Lestat (Cruise) taking Louis (Pitt) under his wing after he turned him into a vampire, who then in turn turns Claudia (Dunst) into a vampire and teaches her the ways. Louis was not good with killing humans despite all Lestat taught him, while Claudia became over aggressive with her killing. They recruited a mother figure for Claudia who was struggling. They tried to kill Lestat, which caused backlash amongst the vampire community. Needless to say Claudia and mother figure get got for their crimes, and Louis gets sealed up behind a wall. Shit basically hits the fan. Banderas saves Louis after some time, and Louis goes Man On Fire on the vampires that fucked him over. Louis later discovers that Lestat is still alive. And that’s the main gist. Then we hear Sympathy For The Devil.

All in all, it really was a great story with great performances. Sure it wasn’t scary horror, more like how Walking Dead is a drama that takes place in the zombie apocalypse. This is going to be one of, if not the highest rated movie on this blog. I give this movie a 9….yeah a 9.
