The Purge: Anarchy (2014)

I wanted to like the original, but I simply didn’t. Great idea, great actors, terrible execution. I still have high hopes. IF this lets me down, I will not be fooled 3 times.

Unemployment is below 5%, crime is virtually gone, it seems like a good place to live.

So I have a question, how is the president protected? Is he above The Purge? Who’s to stop people getting in the secret service, doing it for years, then taking out the president? I need answers dammit! Hmmm, they have a “new founding father”, so maybe that new regime has rules. I’d love part 3 to tackle the governmental aspect.

I’m not happy because there are at least 3 stories going on at once. trying to stay on point will be next to impossible. One guy has a vendetta, then there’s some Puerto Ricans who may or may not be scurred, and an annoying couple who may or may not break up and their car just broke down. I hope she dies, but he can too. I dislike both. I did notice the dude who played The Rock’s dad in the Walking Tall is in this.

I just had to sit and watch. Our 5 main characters of the film. The main guy, Sergeant, he helps keep Eva and daughter Calli alive, as well as Shane and Liz. There are some stories swirling around, it never really gets dull. It hits its mark and moves on without overstaying it’s welcome. Carmelo was by far my favorite character, and although he didn’t get a ton of screen time, when he was on, he was fucking ON.

With this being so new, I am not gonna get into who’s good and bad and who lives and dies. If this was bad, maybe I’d spoil it more. This was a marked improvement over the first one, by leaps and bounds. I gave the original a 3.2, wow, that was harsh on my behalf, but it certainly wasted my time and hopes. This one, it one me back. I still want to know some practical things such as: are hospitals off-limits during the purge, how are real high ranking officials protected, how do they know if an explosive is level 4 or higher. Shit like this.

All in all, I was very impressed, like I think I would buy this on blu ray. I’m giving this a 6.7, right perfect at that 2/3 mark, and may go up higher upon repeat viewings. Is it the best theatrical horror from 2014? Probably. What else hit the theaters that was better? That’s an honest question, not me being a dick. I definitely would recommend this to everybody to dabble in, give it 35-40 minutes and if you aren’t sold, it’s not for you.

Final Rating: 6.7
