Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)

OK, I am watching this off of Kristi’s recommendation.  So here you go, my unbiased opinion.  Everything is fair game from this point forward.

This movie took me a while to get into.  Once it got rolling, it was fine.  I feel that this film could have been better served as not a musical.  Yeah, I know, I know.  I like musicals, but I would have rather enjoyed this film as a really dark flick, maybe with better-looking blood to add to the dark aspect.  But this isn’t about what I want, it is about what I saw.  I get why it was stylized the way that it was.

I don’t care about Johnny Depp one way or the other.  He doesn’t crack my top 50 current actors.  He’s just there but has taken on some great roles in the past.  He didn’t add or take away from this.  The best acting he did was when Mrs. Lovett was singing about being married, and he had that guy look of “I don’t care.  I will just say yes in hoping this appeases you and I don’t want to get in an argument.”  That look was fantastic.  Helena Bonham Carter was the star here, and I thought that she nailed it.  Her character was pretty solid.  Alan Rickman did Alan Rickman things, and I loved it, and his character was cool as shit.  The guy who played Beadle, Timothy Spall, was really good in.  I have long appreciated Sasha Baron Cohen, and this was no different. The acting was there.

I don’t quite think that I will have any songs stuck in my head, I don’t really know if I will ever desire watching this again.  If I do, that’s cool.  It would be to show somebody who is more into this sort of style, and I’d probably have an adequate time.  I simply wasn’t THAT into it this time around.  The star of this whole thing was the story itself.  It’s like if Charles Dickens had crafted a horror story, and I love that aspect.  The singing and songs felt a little blah to me.  Henceforth, I would love to just see the story without the singing.

I don’t know how to rate this.  As it stands, I don’t foresee me ever watching this again, so I give it my highest rating for not re-watching, which is a 5.0.  If I see it again, I could see this climbing to the 6-6.5 range for me, which is pretty good.  I’m glad that I saw this, I have no regerts.  Yes, that is intentional.  Thank you, Kristi, for the recommendation.
