This month, Dominic won the opportunity to choose the November 2018 film, and he chose The Collector. Chris, Kristi, and I join in on the conversation to discuss many different questions. Please enjoy!
Also, Chris and I did a podcast discussing all of these choices, so please check that out at Are You Not Kentertained

1. Whose death did you enjoy the most?
Chris: I’m going to be doing this one mostly from memory, but the daughter’s boyfriend. His just seemed the most over the top.
Kent: I enjoyed the mom dying because she was given simple instructions and failed. This cost her her life.
Dom: All of them, though the girl impaled by the walls kinda eeks the rest out.
2. Which trap was your favorite?
Chris: The younger daughter’s bedroom, between the cat and the acid.
Kent: Acidic floor and also what killed the older daughter.
Dom: The bear traps
3. Were you annoyed with the mom?
Chris: Not really. I would be fucking dumb in that situation too.
Kent: I get the panic. I’m not sitting here trying to act cool. I also get that you are in a situation that you can’t control. You have to try at the very least, and maybe she did, but she annoyed me.
Dom: Mom? Who? What? Huh?
4. Which of these things seemed more unlikely: That the Collector could rig the house with those traps in such a short amount of time OR that The Collector was able to find the ambulance and still capture Arkin at the end?
Chris: The house and the traps. Ambulances will call where they are heading in on their radio systems, I would assume anyone as prolific as the Collector (and if you watch the sequel you find out he is as prolific as shit) would have a radio to at least listen to the police band
Kent: It has to be the traps. To do that by yourself, it has to be time-consuming, right? I would like to know if you have everything planned out, all of the materials, and are good at what you do, how fast could one person do all of this. This needs to be on Mythbusters.
Dom: The house and traps.
5. Who was your favorite character?
Chris: Arkin. Josh Stewart did a really good job portraying a nuanced character with what he had to work with. Incidentally, I also went to High School with a dude named Josh Stewart (no relation)
Kent: I feel that this is a shitty question, and yes I am the shitty person who asked it. There are only 3 candidates here: Arkin, Collector, and the young girl. I think I am going with Hannah. I guess Jill is in play due to her tits. I’m sticking with Hannah. She added depth to this film that wouldn’t have been as good with a lesser character.
Dom: Arkin and the Collector.
6. Do you like knowing so little about The Collector character, or would you have preferred to know a little more?
Kristi: You know me and backstories. I would definitely like to know why is he the way his.
Chris: He is more mysterious and thus scarier. I mean who would want him to be sympathetic when we find out he was molested by his uncle and only survived by hiding in a red box with the bugs for his friend or something stupid like that
Kent: I like backstories. Kristi and I are always discussing the importance of them. I will say this. There are people who love the original Halloween and there are people who prefer the remake. Realistically, the only reasons that you would prefer the remake are that you are too young and saw the remake first, or because you prefer Michael’s backstory. I prefer the remake.
Dom: At first, I was upset that we didn’t know anything about the Collector but after a bit, I felt that we didn’t need to know. Sometimes the unknown is better. Creepier.
7. Did this feel more like Saw or Home Alone to you?
Kristi: Haha! You and Home Alone. It was most definitely more like Saw for me.
Chris: This was where we find out that after he finished causing the Wet/Sticky Bandits irreparable damage for life Kevin McCallister became both an entomologist and a rogue disciple of John Kramer
Kent: I will say Home Alone, the great family-friendly horror movie ever made. I may have an unhealthy obsession with those movies.
Dom: Saw.
8. Would you have gone back in to save Hannah after having been injured as much as Arkin?
Chris: Fuck no. Sorry kid, unless you are a blood relative, at that point you are going to learn to not scream with serial killers in the house
Kent: Ugh, I am such a wimp, and I am also easily guilted into things. I don’t think I could have walked away despite ever logical part of me saying to go get help. I hate that I probably would have gone back in like a dumbass.
Dom: Myself? No. But it’s in his character to do so. It would be shitty if he goes through all that and doesn’t try to save her.
9. Why would the father send Arkin after the gun, when there were no bullets with it?
Chris: Good question. Who the Fuck knows
Kent: Huh…..that happened, didn’t it? I guess the thought process goes is that under normal circumstances, most people, including criminals, will be scared at the sight of a gun. It’s all mental. Seriously, it’s all bullshit. It didn’t make much sense.
Dom: cause he’s a douche.
Bonus Deuce
1. Did you see the sequel, The Collection, and did you like it?
Chris: I did. I thought it was a weaker movie but with interesting things to add to the Collector’s mythology. And a great ending
Kent: Yeah, I saw it. I thought it was good, in comparison to other sequels. It was a different enough movie that made it better in some capacity.
Dom: I did and I did.
2. Do you wish that there was a third film, or perhaps a prequel?
Kristi: A prequel would be fabulous!
Chris: If they did a 3rd film after the second’s ending it would Fuck that movie for me. But a prequel/simultaneous earlier movie, a la several of the Saw sequels would work for me
Kent: Prequel would be fine. It would end probably with the guy in the box in this movie, right?
Dom: Both!
Final Thoughts
Chris: If you leave your common sense aside when you watch movies this is enjoyable as fuck and decently filmed and scary. If you dissect films as you watch them, this one has some glaring plot holes. The sequel is worth watching once as well
Kent: This was a good concept, executed well. It wasn’t wholly original, but original enough for me. Pretty much everything is an amalgamation of ideas from the past at this point. Definitely worth a watch. I am happy that I own both films as I think they have stood the test of time so far.
