The Purge Ep:8 “The Giving Time Is Here”

This week, we got Lila’s backstory, and it didn’t pay off in any reasonable way, aside from her death.  Oh, Penny made another dumb decision that Miguel has to try to help her get out of.  Oh yeah, Joe may be a total bad guy, as he is just capturing any of the main characters that are still alive.  It’s Kristi and I trying to go over the important developments of the week. Any comments in bold are made by me, Kent.

________________________________________________

  1.  Jenna killed Lila.  Would you have preferred Rick or Jenna being killed instead?  If so, who would have been the killer?

Kristi:  I’m guessing you are wanting Jenna to die. I am happy with Jenna killing Lila. That’s going to change her perspective. She did what she had to, to save her hubby but now Joe has them so I’m super confused. Kudos to the writer. I didn’t see that happening.  (My issue isn’t entirely with Jenna.  It has been, especially early.  I think my issue is more with Rick being born without a pair and tricking me into thinking he would be cool.  Without him laying his foot down, he created the Jenna monster.  Not her fault.  At least she’s attractive.  I don’t know what his excuse is.)

Kent:  I would have preferred Rick dying and seeing the two girls have, ahem, “romantic scenes” together, but you can’t always get what you want.  I just rewatched Jigsaw a few days ago. The girl who plays Jenna was so much better in that film, or maybe I just liked her character more.  I am biased. I would have liked Jenna to kill Rick is my answer, or like Jenna and Lila to scissor Rick to death.

  1.  Should Lila have told Ross’ wife, Carol, about Ross being dead?

Kristi: No. She did that out of spite. She’s a shithead and deserved to die.  (I love the anger in this response.)

Kent:  I feel that both options were extremely shitty.  I do think that Carol should have been told, but I think Rick should have told her, not Lila.  Lila was just a spiteful little bitch in that moment, perhaps the most I have enjoyed her character.

  1.  Did Lila’s backstory help us that much with this week’s story?

Kristi:  Not really. Like, I really don’t care about her first kill and then she enjoyed it. I can see she’s crazy. I don’t need a backstory on it.  (Yeah, you and I have discussed Lila a bit.  It was evident from the get-go that she wasn’t as innocent as she portrayed herself.  No need for the backstory that didn’t help the show move forward, which is what a backstory should do.)

Kent:  I feel that the backstory only helps if Lila went on to kill someone.  The timing of this was confusing. Why have this story in an episode where she doesn’t kill?  Or tell the story and then have her kill next week. Oh my bad, she’s dead. They got the timing of this one way off, in my opinion, and that’s actually my biggest gripe from an episode that I enjoyed.

  1.  What did you think about the revelation that Tavis was working for the NFFA all along?  Also, she got got.

Kristi:  It really was not surprising. It was pretty obvious there was a reason behind it. They seemed to have their hand in most things the Purge so it’s a bit predictable for me.  (I honestly just wanted a cult to be a cult and have nothing to do with special interest groups.  I hate this decade.)

Kent:  Having just seen The First Purge, this was a really good tie-in, I felt.  I liked the revelation quite a bit.

  1.  We now are going to see Joe potentially become the central character based on the ending of the episode, and next week’s previews.  Are you still cheering on Joe?

Kristi:  I’m not sure how I feel about him now. Like is he a bad guy now? If so, why was he crying when he didn’t make in time for the old couple? I’m so confused. It needs to be next week already.  (The old couple is a tad confusing.  Was it a red herring?  Does he have a deadline to meet?  Or maybe he is super pissed that he didn’t get to dispense his form of justice?  I have so many things to say, but it’s just incoherent rambling mostly.)

Kent:  Of course I am cheering on Joe.  I have a set amount of people I initially liked and have either changed my opinion on them, or they are dead.  David Ryker, Tavis, Lila, and Albert Stanton are dead. I wanted to like Rick, but I just can’t. That leaves me with Joe, Pete the Cop, and Miguel, to a much lesser degree.  By the way, totally pissed off that I didn’t have a black dude in the cast to cheer on.

Final Thoughts – Miguel just missed out on saving Penny.  Will this be enough reason to get Pete the Cop out of the bar and into some action finally, or will he just provide Miguel with some assistance in a different manner?

Kristi:  I don’t see Pete the Cop going anywhere. He just met these kids. They clearly are disturbed and need help but he allowed them in his safe place and Pen fucked that up. Not his job to find her again. I kinda hope she gets got now. That was a seriously stupid move.  (Penny is really the biggest pain in the ass in this show.  I get that she doesn’t want her “friends” to get got, but putting herself in danger simply puts her brother in further danger, which should be more concerning.  Should be.  I think we may be happy about Pete, but I am basing it on a really vague 8-word statement on IMDB, which isn’t terribly informative.)

Kent:  Well, I thought that there was a 57% chance of Pete leaving the bar.  Then I went to IMDB to look up one of the actors and read the preview for this week’s episode.  I seem to have confirmation that I am either right or wrong, but I won’t spoil it. Also, the creator of The Purge has come out and said that they want to do one more film and end the franchise.  It’s probably smart, but I love these films. We all knew that they would stop eventually. I just wanted more.
