Mayans M.C. 9 Deuce S:2 Ep:1 “Xbalanque”

This week, EZ and Angel remain at odds while EZ deals with the knowledge of Happy being his mother’s killer.  My name is Kent and I write the questions every week and I have a great group of people who answer them.  If you are familiar with some of the other TV Show blogs that we do on the site, then you will recognize most of the names.  If you would like to participate in the blog and answer my inane questions, please contact me at kent@9deuce.com.  Please enjoy!

1.  Do you like the new version of the show’s theme song, “Nunca”?  Do you prefer this or the original one? I can’t find the new version online but you just watched the episode.

Original Version

Raylene:  No I don’t like the new song. They always gotta be ruining shit. Stick to what works people.

Kent:  I was instantly furious.  I have anger issues. I was really loving last season’s version, it worked so well.  This one had a different vibe to it, lessened the impact of the words. Plus when I think of an MC, I think of a dude singing, usually, unless it’s Gemma Teller.  Or MC Hammer.

2.  Did the MC do the right thing in saving the girl (Little Mouse/Mini)?  Keep in mind what may come of their actions with either decision.

Raylene:  I think it was the only solution they could come up with. No one wanted to watch a child tortured and I don’t think they could cut her free without causing suspicion.  (They couldn’t save her without doing what they did given the time constraints.  It was a shit show all around.)

Kent:  Talk about a lose-lose situation.  They did the right thing, but someone’s head will roll due to this, I think.  They don’t want to see a kid tortured, especially one that they know. It was a no-brainer, in the moment.  Still, this decision will be costly. The alternative was also costly though, it will just most likely come at the expense of a member of the MC.

3.  Do you feel that Happy kinda gave himself a bit early on in the episode with his erratic behavior, or can they simply chalk it up to that’s just how Happy is?

Raylene:  I think that just is how Happy is.

Kent:  Happy is so erratic that this could be chalked up to “Happy being Happy”.  It was only suspicious to us, as viewers, I think.

4.  We saw the smiley face twice this episode.  Is this EZ’s reference to Happy or potentially some other meaning or just some random shit to do?

Raylene:  I believe it is a symbol of Happy that Ez has created for himself.  (If it isn’t, I’m going to not riot.  I don’t have proper riot gear.)

Kent:  It better be representative of Happy because it’s a fun idea that they can keep including for a while.  It’s not like Happy is gonna get killed this week. By season’s end? That is a definite possibility.

5.  Will they eventually explain Dita’s burns on the back of her?

Raylene:  I am hoping they will perhaps some type of torture because of her husband or son.

Kent:  I like Raylene’s response.  Are they some kind of reaction to chemo perhaps?  Her torture is a better story, but I will just say that she has cancer.  This would possibly explain why Miguel doesn’t deal with it because he doesn’t want to deal with the idea of his mother dying.  Most people would go out of their way to help a parent going through it, but sometimes people struggle with it and make excuses or distance themselves from the reality of it.  It happens.

Final Thoughts – Favorite scene of this episode was ______?

Raylene:  That Dita was pretty much putting stupid ass Emily in her place by showing her she’s still currently the Alpha female.  (You better make sure to insult Emily in some manner every week of this blog.)

Kent:  EZ just being a badass and strangling that dude.  It was fun, a tad comical, and it’s pure Kurt Sutter.  I also loved the Potter and Felipe’s interaction. You can give me as many scenes with those 2 great actors as often as you like and I will enjoy the hell out of it.

I am always interested in the titles of the episodes. I didn’t know anything about Xbalanque. Naturally, I looked it up and this is good stuff. This is from a SMITE wiki:

“Xbalanque was born with vengeance in his heart.

As one of the Hero Twins, Xbalanque, and his brother Hunahpu, knew their lives would eventually force them to face the Lords of Death, chiefs of the Underworld who murdered their father, but first they would need to master the arts of hunting with blowguns and the violent ball game Pitz. “

Also, judging from Wikipedia, this Maya Hero Twins thing is legit, not just a video game reference. One thing that concerns me is that I keep reading about the father’s death. I am thinking that this is definitely foreshadowing, but it could also be symbolic of their mother’s death instead. To read more about this, click here.
