Kristi and I are back to talk about the second episode of The Purge. I know that we both WANT to love this show. So far, it is very slow. We are cautiously optimistic that things will only continue to escalate, but some of the stuff this week…….yikes. Any comments in bold are made by me….Kent.

- Miguel had a chance to have a machete or a hatchet. He never took either one, when his life is on the line, and he’s a trained marine. Did this make any sense to you whatsoever?
Kristi: No freaking way. I was literally yelling at the TV when he threw them. How freaking dumb is he! I was enjoying the ass kicking but that pissed me off. (Out of the 3 people I talk to about this show, this was the thing that pissed everyone off the most.)
Kent: No, fuck that noise! He knows how to survive and protect himself. If you have the opportunity to better protect yourself, you take it. This was the most illogical thing in the show, that and his ability to park. I was so excited for a Running Man type thing, and I thought they could kill some time with it. Reminded me a bit of 31 as well. They took that idea and killed it off in like 20 minutes. I felt they should have made the course deadlier, maybe given him some people to work with.
- Do you feel bad for anybody on the blue bus or have any sympathy?
Kristi: Not at all. They put themselves in that situation. I have to agree with the bus driver and the chants though. That shit is driving me a little nuts. I hope they don’t continue to do that and we get some action on the bus. That story is getting a little boring to me. (I almost feel like there is going to be a montage or an uprising. The whole thing is mind numbing in so many ways. The least they could do is show what happens in graphic detail to the “victims”.)
Kent: The bus driver because he has to listen to their annoying ass chants. Seriously, you join a cult with the intention of sacrificing yourself on Purge night. What am I missing here? Either you’re 100% in or you’re out. This is kind of a clear-cut situation. Idiots!! I thought that they would rape her, but so far, that hasn’t been a thing. It would seem like that would be a way to mindfuck the people on the bus. I do like that Good Leader Tavis will not change her mind. She is played by Brad Dourif’s daughter, and Brad was, of course, the voice of Chucky and was in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. Such a great film.
- Lila is making things happen at her daddy’s party, including kissing Jenna. By the end of this, will Lila be considered a good person or a bad person?
Kristi: I think she has some agenda. I’m still hoping for chaos at the party. I say she’s a bad person. (If there’s no chaos at the party, which we know there will be based on the previews, but if it’s a dud, I am going to be livid because this part of the story is only potential based.)
Kent: Lila seems like a seductress who is a big phony. I don’t trust me. I am okay if her and Jenna just make out during the whole party.
- We got some of Jane’s backstory about wanting to Purge Ryker. Did this feel completely cliche?
Kristi: I mean, I get it. He’s a pervert but I think Purging on him is a little overboard. (Fuck man, if being a pervert is a reason to get killed during the Purge, I am sooooo screwed…..I mean my friend who’s a total pervert is screwed. I’m not successful enough to warrant someone hiring a hitman for. Phew!)
Kent: Holy balls, a boss was hitting on his attractive underling. How fucking 2018 is that? I get it, it happens. This is the type of stuff that takes a show from being memorable to very run of the mill. I would have loved a convoluted story with a bunch of past history. Not just the old boss trying to nail one of his workers, who is a different skin color and feels like she’s being held back. Am I watching Orange is the New Black or is this The Purge?
- Does the UPS guy at the end give you hope of getting to know at least one badass in this show?
Kristi: My first thought on him was, he could totally join Slipknot with that get-up. I know, you must be shocked at that answer. I like him so far. I enjoyed the fact that he brought a sandwich to the game. I also think he will be a badass and bring some much-needed badassery to the Purging. (He totally could fit right in with Slipknot. Good call. Everybody likes a sandwich, right? This guy has taken over as my personal favorite, although I think Lila’s dad may have potential still.)
Kent: Amen! This guy could be the answer to my wishes. I wanted a story where I could follow a badass purger. I thought this show would deliver us that, if for no other reason than to kill time. The films, it wouldn’t make as much sense, so the TV show is perfect. This guy is the biggest reason I am interested in next week’s episode.
Final Thoughts – Do you feel like this show needs more violence, or is the slow burn fine for the first few episodes?
Kristi: I think there will be more violence. It wouldn’t be The Purge if not. We just needed some backstory to get to know everyone so when it goes down we have feelings and whatnot over it. (I guess, but sometimes I am really fine with senseless violence. This is why I am potentially a horrible person, but that is the cool thing about The Purge. It’s actually why I preferred parts 2 and 3 over the original because it wasn’t so focused on story, in my opinion. I know it would make for bad TV and they wouldn’t get as many or as high quality sponsors, so I get it. I am just saying, I like senseless violence on my screen, dammit!)
Kent: I am usually good with a slow burn, but there has to be some heat to it in order to burn. This is lukewarm. Because they have failed to deliver much violence so far, stop just showing random groups doing shit or hearing gunshots. How about we spend an episode just following Purgers around and see them do fucked up stuff? It would be better than conversations about a threesome from years ago, or not getting your promotion, or finding your brain dead sister.
