The Purge Ep:9 “I Will Participate”

This week, we see Joe for who he truly is, a whiny little insecure bitch.  He puts most of the main characters on trial, and Jane is a moron.  It’s Kristi and I trying to go over the important developments of the week. Any comments in bold are made by me, Kent.

________________________________________________

  1.  Have you ever seen a character become so unlikable over the course of one episode?  Like, go from well liked by an audience to potentially hated this quickly?

Kristi:  I have not. He was badass Joe to big whiney butt in an instant. It made me dislike Pen a little less. (This change really has discouraged me significantly because badass Joe was such a cool concept.)

Kent:  This was like the night that Hulk Hogan turned heel in WCW and joined the NWO.  Outside of wrestling, I don’t know what to really compare this too. It was that dramatic of a turn that I am still unsure what the hell happened.

  1.  For the show’s sake, was turning Joe into the ultimate bad guy the right decision?

Kristi: I don’t know. I mean I’m enjoying it still but I think of him as mentally unstable rather than a bad guy. (He’s a tortured soul that had a run of bad luck and got sick of it and had to smarts or means to do something about it.  Isn’t that basically every comic book villain’s origin story?)

Kent:  It makes sense as a way to bring all of the main characters into one storyline.  I think I like that aspect of it, but I would have liked it more if Rex was like the major antagonist and Joe was the hero that we wanted.

  1.  Jane could not reason with Joe.  Do you agree with her approach to things?

Kristi:  For such a smart woman, I think this was a pretty dumb move. Obviously, the dude needs coddling. She should have just treated him like the baby he clearly is. She may have had a fighting chance. (The funny thing is that I wanted to start off by saying “for such a smart woman” and that’s the friggin problem here.  All of this time, we have been hearing how smart she is. She’s so smart but always held back by men. In some ways I like it in that we all know someone who claims to be smarter than they are because we see them commit constant mistakes that a smart person wouldn’t make.)

Kent:  She was too damn stubborn.  It makes sense now that we had her flashback about how strong-minded she was.  The thing is, as Vince McMahon has said, sometimes you have to eat a shit sandwich.  That’s the truth no matter who you are, and she seemed unwilling to eat it. She got got.  Terrible approach.

  1.  Seriously, why didn’t they stick to the plan of rushing Joe?  That was their best opportunity, right?

Kristi:  Agree. They totally should have. One on one isn’t going to work. Their only hope was all against him. (Here’s the funny thing.  Had they stuck to the plan, here’s exactly what they would have done.  They would have hit Joe once without making sure that he was dead and follow that horror cliche.)

Kent:  IF I had hair, I may have been pulling it out.  Okay, I can’t add much to this, but I found 5 hairs on my left shoulder region. That’s like a new record for me.  I pulled them out, but still, interesting. Seriously, no man should take much pride in shoulder hair, but I get an exception, I think.

  1.  Miguel and Pete the Cop are trying to get to Joe before it is too late.  Then an RPG met their car. It was Rex. While we all knew Rex was probably going to play a role before the finish, did you know it was Rex instantly, or did you only realize it upon the reveal?

Kristi:  I didn’t know it Rex until the reveal. I initially thought it had something to do with security that Joe had drummed up. (I really wish we had more people on this blog because I was thinking the same damn thing.  I wonder if most people thought that or what.)

Kent:  I had 2 thoughts on this.  1. I suspected that Joe may have laid a trap, and was wrong.  2. I wondered if the group that let Pete and Miguel pass had come back, and was wrong.  I didn’t think about it being Rex until the reveal and I liked that pleasant surprise. I love Pete.  He’s by far my favorite character given the others being dead or complete pussies.

Final Thoughts – We have Joe, Jenna, Rick, Penny, Miguel, Pete, and Rex.  Tell me which of these characters will die. Pick as many as you want.

Kristi:  I’m thinking Rick, Penny, and Rex.

Kent:  Rex seems likely.  Probably Rick or Jenna and since Jenna has the baby, I’ll go Rick.  Then you have Miguel, Penny, and Pete. Out of them, I can make an argument for any of them.  Pete seems accepting that he won’t hold onto his status with this new generation. Miguel is on a mission to protect Penny.  Penny is on a mission to be an idiot and seems willing to accept the death. With 2 people willing to accept their role or their death, my money would be on Miguel to sacrifice and Pete to promise to watch after Penny.  That just seems like a horror cliche. Oh yeah, Joe. Bad guys don’t fair too well in The Purge films. I can’t imagine that he will be the exception. Rex seems more likely to survive than Joe. Final picks to die: Rick, Miguel, and Joe.  Rex somehow survives. They aren’t going to kill any more women because it’s horror, and Jane got got.
