The Walking Dead 9 Deuce: S:10 Ep:7 “Open Your Eyes”

This week, Siddiq’s journey comes to an end at the hand of a Whisperer spy. Carol interrogates her captive Whisperer and pisses off Lydia. My name is Kent, and I ask 5 weekly questions and then people answer them.  Any comments in BOLD are written by me.  I hope you enjoy and if you or someone you know may want to do this blog, contact me, leave a comment, etc.

1.  At any point, did you consider that Dante was a bad guy or a Whisperer or a spy?  What type of punishment should he receive?

Bob:  I was suspicious because he was really likable. I didn’t think he was a whisperer, just a bad guy.  (Is this where we are now?  We find a likable character and we have to suspect them?  Yeah, we are.)

Raylene:  Only time I got suspicious is in the cell when he said now don’t try anything and the Whisperer said never. But where did he originally come from? Did Dante just appear and they took him in?  (The timeline is a bit suspicious.  He would have had to be welcomed into the group after the winter stuff, I think.  At least after the season finale, which is what I am referring to.)

Chris:  I had read some theories about him being a Whisperer, and I always thought he was trying to hard to be buddies with Siddiq.  Now it makes sense that part of his job was to keep an eye on him. He should be killed by Rosita, but Carol will probably do it.  (I think Rosita deserves a win, but if she’s still sick, I would put money on Gabe.  He definitely could use a moment.)

Kent:  No, of course, I didn’t.  Why would I? He just seemed like a guy trying to fit in while working with a super crazy guy.  How is it that Lydia didn’t recognize him…or did she?

2.  Will anybody actually figure out the water issue?  Also, is it just me or was that a terrible water system?  There is no real way of knowing if anybody turned it, for instance.  Will Dante confess about the water issue?

Bob:  I was scratching my head at the water system. Drinkable and non-drinkable water came out of the same spigot? (That appeared to be the situation, as silly as it is.)

Raylene:  It seems like that system could be easily contaminated. I’m not sure if he’ll admit to being a Whisperer though.  (I am guessing he will give himself up during interrogation.  This time, they won’t be gentle.)

Chris:  The preview showed someone beating up Dante, so I figure he will be interrogated and confess about the water.  And yes, the water situation leaves it wide open to deceive people. (It seems like such a bad system that could easily be manipulated.  Rodney could have messed with it and blamed Lydia, for example. I think that they specifically waited on showing us the water system because it would have given too much away.)

Kent:  So you just turn it once and goes from drinkable to non-drinkable?  I saw no way to indicate anything. Bad system. The worst part is that this was most likely constructed by Eugene.

3.  Does Carol have anybody else’s best interests in mind at this point or is she too hellbent on her own path?  Should she have handled the Lydia situation differently?

Bob:  Hilarious.  Well done Carol. All is fair in love and war.  (This show is always better with a loose cannon or two.)

Raylene:  At this moment Carol only cares about revenge on Alpha for Henry.  (Every time that I see Henry’s name, I just want to boo him.)

Chris:  Carol clearly only cares about what she wants.  Henry loved Lydia and for Carol to just use her like that says a lot about her state of mind.  (Yeah, she’s too deep in the forest to see the trees.  She ain’t seeing the full picture.)

Kent:  She’s lacking perspective, or the care or desire to gain any further perspective.  That leads to really bad decisions.

4.  The twists and turns continued with Gamma and Aaron.  Is Aaron playing this intelligently? Will Gamma reveal that Lydia is still alive?  Will she even have the opportunity to let other Whisperers know?

Bob:  Telling another whisperer is certain death.  I can see Gamma commenting on Lydia and her situation to see if there’s a reaction though.  (I can see that scene play out and Alpha really change her demeanor fast.)

Raylene:  If she tells and Alpha or Beta are in earshot she is dead. Aaron is playing a dangerous game there. The Whisperers are too unpredictable. (I think Aaron is in a similar boat to Carol.  We don’t have as much insight on Aaron’s plan though, but this seems like a bad plan.)

Kent:  Aaron is playing this quite poorly.  I see what he is trying to accomplish, but it’s not like she is going to go back to camp and just tell everybody how wonderful life is in Alexandria and then recruit people.  That’s not how it will play out. Gamma will be a damn fool. I have a sneaking suspicion that she gives herself away sooner than later though. I don’t think she will try to tell other Whisperers.

5.  Do you think that there are other spies elsewhere?

Bob:  maybe but that really has not been alluded to at all. (Spies haven’t really been alluded to, but they seem to show something happening in one place and then it happens elsewhere.  So a precedent is there, no matter how weak that theory is. It is weak.)

Raylene:  Yes I think in each community there are.  (Oceanside is full of terrible people, but do they also have spies?)

Kent:  I think Margo was and it would explain so damn much.

Final Thoughts – Dante was just a cool guy in the comics that became Maggie’s love interest and in the show, he turned out this way.  It was a great change. Knowing what you know from the show so far, if one character had to turn good or bad at any point in the series, whose path would you have altered and when?  For example, Eugene actually sticking with Negan or Daryl siding with Negan or Michonne staying at Woodbury. Have fun and be creative.

Bob:  I think the governor after beheading Herschel and finally acquiescing and working with Rick would be fantastic.  (That would have been very interesting.  I’d like to see Governor at Terminus.)

Raylene:  I think Carl instead of trying to kill Negan he joins the Saviors and becomes Negan’s head henchmen.  (Carl got it and Negan would have treated him really well and may have found a way to broker peace.)

Kent:  I have so many.  What if Shane was straight with Rick and told him that he was nailing Laurie?  What if Beth ended up with Glenn and Maggie with Daryl? What if Carol never broke up with Ezekiel?  What if Rick was truly seeing Laurie and this show added ghosts? But here is my favorite what if. What if Glenn really died under the dumpster and everything since then is Maggie imagining the future?  So she keeps him alive for a while but then decides to acknowledge that Glenn is dead so she creates this big bad Negan who kills Glenn. This causes her to rise to power to take out Negan. She gets so mad at one point that she has to kill, so she lynches Gregory.  Once it is over, she wishes that she was dead, but instead of killing herself, she just takes a self-exile. She thinks about what it would be like to survive a winter, what it would be like on a fishing boat, or what it would be like to a Whiskey Cavalier. The whispers in her mind take a life of their own.  They manifest into her nightmares killing those closest to her like Enid, Jesus, and Tara. In the end, she needs closure, so she returns to fully confront those demons. You know that this isn’t the dumbest theory that you’ve ever heard. Maybe second dumbest.
