This week, we see how Angela and Jon met and the story of the past 10 years of their lives. Then Jon gets canonized. Here we are, on the precipice of the season finale. It was a brilliant episode. My name is Kent, and I ask 5 weekly questions and then people answer them. Any comments in BOLD are written by me. I hope you enjoy and if you or someone you know may want to do this blog, contact me, leave a comment, etc.
1. Did Jon simply accept his fate? Did he possibly disappear on his own accord? Does he know that there is light at the end of the tunnel?
Jim: Jon has always accepted his fate. He’s so narrowly focused that he views everything as “needs to fall into its place.” That, I believe, coupled with his detachment from Earth, are his only two true weaknesses. As we saw in the pool scene, he can in fact change and effect time, as he linked Angela and Will in a conversation across a decade (though hypothetically she started the mess she was in by doing it). He does know there is light at the end, but judging by what he’s said, it’s a tragic light for them as a couple (don’t know who it means will be most affected). (Normally I would argue that Jon caused the issue and not Angela, and that’s exactly what I plan on doing. I only say it is his fault because he had the ability to create the link in the first place. I know, chicken or the egg. The way I see it, if Jon doesn’t have the abilities that he has, this never happens. This a boring take. Screw it, I’m back to blaming Angela.)
Chris: Jon believes he cannot change what will happen, even though he can. He has shown the ability to manipulate time, so he clearly can make changes. I think he believes that even if he attempts to change, everything will still happen. (I don’t know if this is something that has been considered in the books, but has there been precedence where Jon has actually altered other aspects of time/reality/history? I am not sure what word I am looking to use.)
Kent: Jon seems like a dude who doesn’t believe that there are 50 shades of grey. He is very much a man who lives in black and white, I’m guessing. So if he says or thinks that this is, then he accepts it. Then again, I wonder if at any point, if he derives any joy from altering anything? I want to believe that he disappeared on his own accord, meaning that maybe the cannon hit him, but he is off in his own limbo trying to figure stuff out. It’s like, he knows that this event had to happen for something bigger or more important to happen. My head hurts.
2. Was Jon controlling Topher’s toys all along? Did Jon possibly give some of his powers to Topher?
Jim: I think the toys floated on their own, and Jon was not conscious of himself during the time they had the kids (adopted), so he didn’t yet pass powers, but I do think the powers will be passed to Topher (not the other two relatively nameless kids) (Rosie and Emma Abar) eventually. I did read a theory that the powers were in the waffles he was making, but I don’t believe that as he never finished them cause Angela liked to thematically break the eggs. (Man, Jim, you are just blaming Angela for all sorts of things this week. I’m liking this theme.)
Chris: I’m thinking maybe he did pass his powers to Topher. They included that conversation for a reason, and Topher has shown some telekinetic abilities. To Jim’s point, while the waffles didn’t succeed, unless I’m mistaken, they have shown Cal making breakfast on other occasions. Maybe that’s how he gave Topher his power? (This is where my head is at. After rewatching the first 5 episodes, I have come to realize that everything that has happened, has been there for a rhyme and a reason. Even little things like Bian at the newsstand, for example.)
Kent: Topher has powers. Jon was like DMX, and X Gon Give It To Ya. So yes, Jon gave Topher the powers, perhaps unintentionally. Maybe something else triggered in the 10 years. I have been obsessing over a few things this season, and Topher’s abilities have been one of them, so I am super excited to see this play out.
3. It feels like Wade and Blake’s stories may intertwine in the finale. What roles will they play and will it be useful or more of an escape?
Jim: I have no question that they will intertwine for an escape, but it will be very useful. There has not been a note missed so far this season, so I don’t believe the meet-up will be trivial or an easy out. I’m not sure how It will happen…. but I can’t wait to see it. I’ll answer the rest of this in another question… (Ladies and gentlemen, that’s what you call a cliffhanger.)
Chris: Wade is obviously at the scene, and I’m thinking that must be the plan. The added wrinkle will be Blake knowing Dr. Manhattan is there. How is she going to react to that? (Yeah, I regret not asking how Blake is going to handle Jon being in a relationship with Angela the past 10 years.)
Kent: Wade is my favorite character and Blake is in my top 5, it fluctuates from time to time based on how often Red gets screen time. I expect this to be the most fun scenes of the episode. They don’t have to be the best or most interesting, but I think they will be fun as hell. I am curious how Sen. Keene plays into this episode.
4. Trieu wants to do something big. Knowing what we now know, what can she do to help save people?
Jim: I would say of all the plot lines, I’ve invested the least amount of time thinking about her plan. It’s a great storyline, but it gets a little lost in the crowd. I’ve thrown a passing thought before that the clock is a big, cyclops-like mind control device, so if that’s the case I’d say she’d change their thought process to believe something…. truth about squids? To instill apathy about the 7k message? Undo racism all together? I just don’t know what her plan is, but I really am excited to see it.
Chris: I’m excited to see what happens with her and the millennium clock, but they have said so little about it, I guess it will be a surprise.
Kent: Yay, we’re all clueless. I’m hoping that it is a big advertisement for Trieu’s new line of Smart Watches. That’d be awesome, right? It will serve as a beacon to something that we are unaware of. That’s the best I can think of.
5. Back in episode 5, I think, we saw Ozy launched into space. He used the bodies of dead Philips and Crookshanks to spell out “SAVE ME D”. Was that the whole message? Also, do you think that the original woman on Europa holds a special position like the Warden does?
Jim: I completely missed the D (insert jokes there). (Well, usually you insert the D, but now we have simply taken a wrong turn at Albuquerque.) When I looked initially, I thought it a smiley face like the Comedian’s pin. Now that it’s confirmed to be a D (again have at it) I don’t know what to think. As far as the 1st Crookshanks, I don’t see one yet, but I would assume if there is a special 1st edition Phillips, there should be a 1st edition Crookshanks as well. Don’t know what the role would be.. to be seen (I like the term “1st edition Crookshanks”. It rolls right off the tongue. Just like…nope, moving on.)
Chris: The “D” is either Doctor, or based on my past theory, Daughter. As far as Crookshanks, I’m assuming she must play an important role, but I have no idea what it could be… (I like the idea of Daughter, but that is so many bodies. I’m game for it. Just a lot of work.)
Kent: If we were setting odds, I’d guess that some form of Dr. or Doctor would he like 70% likely. I looked through all the character names, and nothing really stands out. I don’t think that he was calling out for the real Don johnson, but that would be solid. I think I just have to go with Dr, but I am really hoping that it is something else.
Final Thoughts – Any final predictions that you want to make right now before the season finale, stake your claim and own it.
Jim: Wild Prediction time!!! Comedian is Trieu’s dad, The plan to heal the world will out Ozy’s original plan, while stopping the 7k (uniting the world against both domestic terrorists, and a grand mastermind). I think Looking glass rebels against 7k even though they shared the truth to free him. The tragic end to the relationship is Angela dying, not Jon. Jon passes powers to Topher and Will, with both the past and future to carry on his legacy. Nite Owl saves Laurie, not Wade. Lube Man is Petey, and he slides away to chronical everything much like Rorschach’s journal in the book. Law Panda is the key to Petey’s files being released because we need more Law Panda…. covered all my bullet point wild theories… Don’t have the space to cover why I think everything can happen, I just know that if I hit on at least one of them, I’ll call the win for game!
Chris: OK….. Wade and Blake get trapped trying to escape and are saved by…. LUBE MAN (Petey.)
Ozy is Trieu’s “father.” He created her in a lab.
Dr. Manhattan dies, but only after passing his powers to…. wait for it…… im going to throw a random name for fun, and because it would be awesome…. Will.
The millennium clock serves as some sort of hypnotism device that cures racism
Nite Owl is freed after the world learns of what Ozy did with the squids.
Ozymandias has been encased in gold this whole time!
Kent: I think the Intrinsic Field Generator in Russia is seen or talked about again. This has been one of my favorite minor things to keep an eye on. Most likely, it won’t be back until season 2, but I am keeping my fingers crossed and for this to be a way to get Red some serious screen time.
We will find out who Trieu’s dad is or his clone or whatever. That mystery will be solved. There are only so many males that we have in this show, and none seem like a great match for this. Red would be amazing as would Panda, but I think that is just me wanting to get them on screen more frequently. I’m going to say that Topher is actually Trieu’s dad in some capacity.
Petey is also possibly turning heel. I think it is fair to assume that we either get a big death or a big twist, or a face or heel turn (That’s wrestling speak for going from good guy to bad guy or vice versa.) Petey or Topher would make excellent villains, but so would Blake. I feel that Blake has to stay where she’s at due to the impending Nite Owl business.
I have to imagine that Ozy makes his way to present-day Earth, if he hasn’t already, as was speculated in ep 4. I really want to see him and Lady Trieu interact.
Topher and Bian form a romance. Nahhhh, that won’t be for another season or two.
Finally, and most importantly, we’re going to learn the trieu purpose of the elephant. (I know that you liked what I did there) I am so excited. Also, I really enjoyed the name of this episode “A God Walks into Abar”. That’s pretty clever. Tick Tock. The trieuth will set us free.
